This famous street, now lined with shops, bars, cafes, cinemas etc, was laid out by luke Gardner in the 18C as a mall and then converted into a residential square. Renamed Sackville street, it developed into the most important street in 18C Dublin; later it was extended south to Carlisle Bridge (1794); the street and present bridge (1880) were renamed after O'Connell in 1922. Down the centre of the street stands a row of monuments: (south to north):statue by John Foley of Daniel O'Connell;William Smith O'Brien (1803-64), the leader of the Young Ireland Movement, Sir John Gray, who organised Dublin's water supply; James Larkin (1876-1947), founder of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union (1909); Father Theobald Mathew of the 19C temperance movement.
